18th Sep. 45 My dearest Nora, I had your long and interesting letter. Thank God you are feeling so well. Seeing there was so much trouble you getting in there, wouldn’t it be awful foolish for you not to stay until that trouble heals up. After all it is just money thrown away if you don’t get the period of rest ordered. It is a pity that it is costing so much but what is it with your life. If you think you would be alright and comfortable in the 5 gp room and that you would get the same food maybe you should change. However as John is going up you will be able to decide. She might chuck you out altogether if you ask for the 5 gp. Room. I know that you are in the 6 gp. Maybe you should stay in it. But definitely you must remain otherwise the money already spent is just wasted.
I witnessed ********** ********* wedding yesterday and it was altogether very dowdy and mournful looking. ******(Bride's Sister) had on a blue two piece with coat to match. She bought the rig in Burkes of Dublin, same place you got your white costume. Eileen says that yourself and she were looking at the same rig on the window the day you bought yours. ****** the bridesmaid had some sort of a fawn costume on her made by Miss ******** and it was just a sight. Turban made of the same material; it was just terrible looking. The groom was badly dressed too; had on a dark suit and an old looking red pullover. ****** ********** was the best man and looked better than any of them in a navy blue suit. They There were about 20 guests at the wedding; their own family and then a few friends from Pettigo. It was a priest from Dublin who married them at the 1 O’clock mass. The priest we were told was a guardian of the groom since babyhood. The parents are dead; he has one sister older than he is; she was there too. No other Dublin friends. *******’s (brides sister) boy was not there. Mrs ************ told us that they had a phone call from him to say that he couldn’t come as his father was very ill and (he) couldn’t leave him. Boloney. So it looks as if it is all up with **** and him. Mrs ********** had on a new black coat made too by Miss *****. She told me that ****** bought the material 2 years ago in Belfast. ***** wore the old black coat of ***** with a white flower underneath. His sister was all in black too; it all looked like a funeral and when mass was over ***** sobbed |

and wept. There were no photos of any kind ; just confetti thrown and they moved off to Lough Erne for breakfast. ****** seemed to keep weeping when she was moving off. There was no fun and only a few extra people in the Church. Mrs **** and ****** ******** were the only prods. The Canon took no part at all only when the priest married them he came rushing out of the vestry, opened the little gates and hurried them in to do the signing before mass.; then he went off with himself by the back up home. Mrs * was telling me that he was in bad humour about bringing the priest from Dublin to marry them. John didn’t

bother his head getting her a present and I think that he was perfectly right. I gave her a little coloured cloth that I bought in Tully’s two years ago at 10/ and I never used it and a toilet set that was used on Eileen’s table. We pressed it and made it do. On account of ***** (brides father) being such a good customer I had to give her something.
Myself and Eileen went down with it the night before for an excuse to see. She hadn’t as many gifts as ***** **** had. And anything she had was mainly little clothes. She had two pair of sheets, an eiderdown; Josie Scallon gave her the eiderdown. **** ******** gave her a tea set that he smuggled from Sligo and ******** |
I met (the) Colton girl when I was coming down from mass this morning. She stopped me to ask about you. I asked her how she getting on; she said she was fed up last week with the numbers over 40 but not so bad this week but that she would rather be teaching seniors. She says mass will be hard to play too. I was up in Belfast on Sat. I bought a showerproof coat for Kevin; Eileen got her tweed coat too; very nice £4-15. If you are in the city price them as I’m sure they’re much dearer. I looked for a coat for myself but could get nothing to fit me. We came home on the 4.30 as Kevin went off to the football match between England and Ireland. I had no word from Vin since. Now abandon the idea of coming home; to make yourself well is the all important item now
