Father Joe Mahon 05.11.10 - 01.06.91
This Joe Mahon was the eldest child of Joseph Senior and his second wife Minnie. At age 9 he went to live in Ballyshannon with his father's sister Susanna, Auntie McGurran as she was lonely. He went to school in CBS, Ballyshannon and then to St. Eunan's college in Letterkenny. Joe was very clever at school, studied for the priesthood in the Lateran University (known as the Pope's university) in Rome, obtained a PHD and was ordained for Raphoe in the Irish college there in 1935. He said his first mass in St. Patrick's in Rome on 17th March 1935. None of his family could afford to attend.
He was then sent to St. Saviour's Parish in Govan Glasgow where he served for 15 years before being recalled to his own diocese serving in Kincasslagh for a short time. However, he was not happy there and got permission to return to Glasgow, St. Philomena's. Unfortunately his health broke down and he was sent to Belmont Park Hospital for priests in Waterford where he died. He was buried in Irvinestown in the family grave. |
