Father Hugh Mahon 17.09.18 - 05.03.71
Hugh Mahon was the seventh child of Joseph Senior and the fifth with his second wife Minnie. Hugh went to CBS Omagh and then St. Patrick's College in Thurles Co. Tipperary where he was ordained as a priest in June 1944 for the Diocese of Glasgow. He was sent first to St. Augustine's, Coatbridge and later appointed PP to Moodiesburn, just outside Glasgow City. Hugh loved drama and music having been involved in the Amateur Dramatic Society in Irvinestown. He set up a choir in his parish and produced concerts. He also with the help of his parishioners built a new church, St. Michaels's along with Chapel house. Hugh was a dynamic character taking an interest in many things, including gardening and antiques. When Vin was extending the hotel in the '60's he went over to Hugh who knew all the junk shops where good quality furniture was being sold as it had gone out of fashion. Vin was able to furnish the hotel with these. Hugh also had 2 Chihuahua dogs which could walk on their hind legs; he got his housekeeper to make vestments for them and dressed them up as St Patrick and the Bishop. When having his evening G&T he would give a toast saying 'Slitther, Slatther Holy Watther'. Hugh worked extremely hard and had not been a strong child. He died suddenly of a heart attack and was taken home to Irvinestown to be buried. After his death a Street was named in his honour; Mahon Court.
