Jim was the 2nd Child of Joseph Senior and his first wife Margaret McKenna. He trained in Morse Code in Bolton St. College, Dublin, joined the Merchant Navy as a radio officer and travelled the world sending home letter from exotic places. However, in 1935 he was on shore leave in Portland Oregon in the USA when he was knocked down and killed in a hit and run. There was an investigation and the driver was charged but the outcome of the case is not known at present. However, it was widely reported in the Oregon Newspapers at the time. The priest who conducted the funeral sent a long letter to Irvinestown with details of the accident . when the telegram announcing Jim's death was received Minnie turned to Nora and said 'now Nora, you're the only bread winner'.
Jim's letters were the inspiration for Don and Vin to join the Merchant Navy.
