Father Dermot Mahon 17.10.16 - 05.12.79
Dermot Mahon was the sixth child of Joseph Senior and the 4th with his second wife Minnie. Dermot went to the Christian Brothers Grammar in Omagh and then on to All Hallows College in Dublin run by the Vincentians. Dermot was a good footballer and played for the Fermanagh GAA team. He volunteered for the missions and was ordained in June 1940 for the diocese of Goulburn in New South Wales, Australia. However, due to the war he didn't get there until 1946 filling his time by assisting Irvinestown P.P. Canon Trainor. He was also very involved in the local St. Molaise Dramatic Society assisting them to win the best rural section in the Bundoran Drama Festival. He finally arrived in Australia in 1946 where he served for over 30 years visiting home twice. (Irish priests were only allowed home every 10 years) He returned to Irvinestown in the mid seventies in poor health where he moved into room 7 in the Hotel and spent his last few years assisting in the local parish. He is buried in Irvinestown.
